Opening new teaching opportunities for you and

bringing the benefits of yoga to more people

The transformation for a student teacher, where you teach your classmates, to a yoga teacher where you teach the public can be daunting. But for most of us, the biggest shock is how limited many people’s mobility is and how much pain people cope with as standard.

This training will give you skills to teach a specific chair yoga class, and also get you thinking about how you can adjust or integrate some of these adjustments into a regular yoga class.

Chair yoga is often thought of as “yoga for old people”. However, the audience for chair yoga is much wider. have a look at the list below and see how many others you can add to it.

Bring Yoga to a larger audience?

  • Wheelchair yoga

  • Ageing Population e.g. Organisation, Clubs & Nursing Homes

  • Injured & Recovering Populations, e.g. Rehabilitation Centers

  • The Office workers

  • The Professional Drivers - Taxi, Long hall, Driving instructions

  • Specific industries with restricted movement during work - eg. Airline Staff

What is chair yoga really about?

Chair yoga is firstly about understanding the tools of yoga; asana, pranayama, and meditation form the perspective of what the effects of each are, and what is actually needed to be able to achieve that effect.

Secondly, it is about understanding anatomy and physiology, from the perspective of what is necessary, beneficial and restrictive to be able to live a healthy life.

Finally, it is about having the imagination to keep the core aspects, drop the unnecessary and find ways to adjust the asana or the environment to make it safe and useful to the student.

The Prayer of the Chair Yoga Teacher

Give me the understanding to know the essential

The confidence to drop the unnecessary

And the wisdom to know the difference

If you can breathe you can do yoga.

Each of the asanas & pranayamas offer many benifets. Our job as teachers is to explore with our students what their goals are, and how to use asana and pranayama to achieve that goal in their body on this day.
